Description: Vintage Huon Pine Pilot Launch Encumbrance Check?
Designed by AC Barber and built in 1952 by Frank Hickman for the Burnie Port Authority, this strong and capable vessel served as the Burnie pilot launch until 1998, She is planked in 2 inch huon pine on bluegum frames. She is largely in original condition, still running her original Gardner 5L3 engine, swinging a 40 inch prop through a Gardiner 3UC gearbox, all in perfect order. Cruising speed is 8 knots, 10 knots max. She has sleeping for 2 in the spacious fo'c'sl and a sleeping for 2 in the large aft cabin, with plenty of floor space for extra bodies. There is also a bunk in the wheelhouse.
After being decommissioned she was used for fishing in Bass Strait. She is fitted with a Kabota auxiliary engine driving an hydraulic hauler which can also drive the heavy fisherman style anchor winch which is matched with very heavy ground tackle.
The Miowera has a modest oregon mast with a winch that is used in conjunction with a small spinnaker.
Included are historical records and photographs, as well as hard to get engine manuals etc.

The build specifications for this vessel required her to be able to come along side freighters in the rough conditions in Bass Strait without sustaining damage. She is very robustly constructed. She was also configured to be able to tow large vessels.
