Description: Alan Payne Multishine sloop Built in 2007 for extreme condition cruising.
'Scrimshaw' is an Alan Payne multi-shine steel yacht of the 'Skookum' design.
She was constructed with a view to long distance cruising in all climates by 2 people and is set up for shorthanded sailing. All equipment is amply specified to go with the seaworthy design and construction.
Scrimshaw has circumnavigated Australia and Tasmania. A sister-ship has been to Antarctica, South Georgia is and Greenland.

Alan Payne's view on yacht design was that a yacht should be seaworthy, comfortable and fast. On a recent trip of 1000nm she averaged 7kn. From the tip of her mast to the bottom of her keel, everything was designed with extreme weather sailing in mind and for durability. Her stanchions are 90cm high for safety. Most of her fittings, including chain plates, bow fitting, rudder shaft, propeller shaft, rudder tube and prop shaft tube, etc are all constructed of 2205 duplex stain steel, which is far above 316 marine stainless steel, will never rust, stain or even need polishing. This is a perfect example to illustrate the kind of thought proles and quality demonstrated through the whole build and fit-out of the yacht.

Thanks to her tapered stern, overhanging stern and high bow, excellent balance and low gravity center, she is a dream to balance and always keep a smooth and pleasant motion through the sea way, even in bad weather. Her Flemming wind vane will stir the boat without requiring electricity and in all weather conditions. The boat is also fitted with an electronic autopilot which has a repeater at the navigation area.

Designed to be sailed easily and safely by a couple, allowing for one to rest when the other keeps watch, her cockpit is deep, safe, and well protected by the hard dodger. The seats are 2m long, fitted with comfortable mattresses on which the off-watch person can sleep. An infill is stowed below but can be added to fit in front of the companionway, allowing for an adult to sleep comfortably beneath the protection of the dodger. When at anchor, a battened awning sits on the boom and protects the whole cockpit from the elements.
The princess seat on the transom is the perfect place to watch the boat sail by herself, or to relax in the shade of the Bimini. (It also provides a perfect place to store the plank used to tie fenders when docking against poles. )
Another well thought of feature is the integrated swim ladder, which comes up flush with the railing and drops down easily to make boarding the boat from the water very easy. The 90cm high stanchions and triple railing makes the boat feel more like a little ship than a yacht, and provides extra security against equipment or people falling overboard.

Inside the cabin is altogether another world. It is hard to imagine when looking at the classic lines of this graceful boat, that the interior is so bright and modern. With several large double glaze toughened glass portholes which will never break, graze, or become wet with condensation looking over the water, to numerous overhead hatches (each has their own cover) to allow natural light and ventilation, the interior is always flooded with light. The pure white interior, Scandinavian style timber finish and light color upholstery in perfect condition, one is at once reminded that the boat is only a few years old, and if she combines the skills and strength of the proper cruising boats of lore, she also integrates all the modern luxuries and comfort of a very modern boat. The hull is also fully insulated from the waterline up, so that you can remain comfortable and dry even in extremely cold weather, where condensation can become a nightmare. This also means that the boat remains pleasant in hot temperatures. A beautiful diesel stove sits in one corner, and just half an hour of use every few hours will ensure that the cabins remain very warm even in below zero temperatures. Hot, ducted ventilation in the wet locker running provides you with an authentic 'drying room'.

The master cabin is forward, with side accessed comfortable double berth, overhead hatch and plenty of dedicated storage including hanging locker. Another double cabin is aft to port, with its own portholes and storage compartments.

The saloon and dinette is large enough for 4,5 people to sit comfortably, with dropping sides for easier traffic when not used, and removable fiddles when used in the seaway. A crew berth above the settee has a folding side, to transform into a proper single berth equipped with a lee-sheet when needing an extra crew berth.

Divided in two separate areas, the heads are of a size you would expect on a much larger yacht. The shower is in a separate cubicle with full standing headroom. The toilet is fitted with Lavac and a holding tank. Pressurized hot and cold water is distributed through the boat, with a large hot water heater designed to run on electricity or to simply store hot water created by the engine in just a few minutes.

The lovely timber floor is divided in several easily opened hatches to allow you to inspect the bilges at short notice, or to use this space as additional storage. The bilges are immaculate and dry.

'Scrimshaw' is fitted with a reliable Yanmar 4JH3E largely oversize (56HP), and connected to to two large alternators. There s 500L fuel capacity, hence a range of over 112 hours or around 780 nautical miles!

Engine hours are at 1300, and the engine is absolutely immaculate.
