Description: Herreshoff 28 Refurbished timber sloop with small pilot house.
HAMPTON'S STYLE REFURBISHMENT OF GORGEOUS HERRESHOFF YACHT!
The owner of this little beauty wanted to incorporate the stunning lines of the famous Herreshoff Yacht Design with the style and feel of a Hampton's Apartment on water!
No expense spared to create a relaxing and unique place to enjoy a leisurely lunch with friends, a dip in a quiet little bay in Pittwater, a cosy and comfortable bed for an afternoon nap and then an easy sail home with a glass of wine on deck!
One of the most celebrated yacht designers around the world Nathanael Herreshoff, an American naval architect, designed well over 2000 craft and produced more than 18,000 drawings. He also and built five winning America's Cup yachts. The number of yachts he designed that won the Astor Cup, Puritan Cup and Kings Cup outnumbered the winning yachts of all rival yacht designers combined between 1980 and 1938 alone. All of his designs have sailed through changing times and technology without losing their dedicated admirers for the beauty of their lines, performance and capabilities on the ocean.

This Herreshoff 28 'Kestrel II' (previously named 'Bliss', is certainly a yacht of pedigree. Just one look at her, sitting proud and pretty among huge plastic power cruisers at the Royal Motor Yacht Club, and we fell hopelessly in love with her. As we do not often list boats in this price range for the reason that they are often poorly presented or maintained, we were more than impressed with 'Kestrel II', whose owner's modest asking price is a reflection of his wish to see her go to a loving home quickly, and who during his time of ownership, and his father's ownership before this, saw them lavish this pretty little boat with the best of care regardless of the expense.

Complemented by a small and incredibly well designed pilot house, her beautiful lines would be quite the attraction at your local timber boat festival. Her freshly painted hull, deck and cockpit are trimmed by varnished Burmese teak, silver Ash and Oregon (we have all the receipts).
Her traditional bronze and reinforced glass portholes contributes to her classic style, where strength and durability speak first.

From a live-able design point of view, this Herreshoff 28 ticks many boxes: she is incredibly pretty to behold, of course, but once on board quickly reveals herself to also be full of other important qualities. A gentleman's yacht able to challenge your local yacht club's twilight racing, she can sit a crew of 6 easily in her cockpit or at the rail, where her decks are far enough from the coach-roof for sitting or for traffic. Her deck gear is simply but efficiently organized, with all lines run aft, and for a family with weekend cruising in mind she is easy to sail, with her recently fitted furling Genoa on Furlex Furler, lazy jacks and good sizes self tailing winches. A full size boat cover easily installed and removed ensures that your maintenance schedule is kept to a minimum, as it protects the whole boat from sun and rain damage when you are away.

Her interior is fresh and clean, without smell or mold. 'Kestrel II' has just undergone a total refurbishment with no expense spared with all new upholstery in rich navy and styled in the 'Hampton's look' including stylish stainless anchor curtain rails and stainless boating cleats as hooks. Purchases from the Emporium at Collaroy include Navy and White Cushions, white cane folding table for outside dining with matching navy with white piping cushions and serving tray. (Receipts come in at over $3,500). Over $1100 has just been spent on purchasing and installing a state of the art Fusion sound system with blue tooth, featuring indoor and outdoor speakers.
The galley has a new gas burner cooktop and no expense spared on marine crockery, glasses, new pots and pans and timber cutting boards and trays. The custom made dining table has just had a recent white gloss painted finish and compliments the fresh white and timber interior. There is a stainless steel sink with pressurized fresh water. Dedicated cup and plates storage provides safe storage for your crockery, and there are cupboards for food. There is no ice box on the boat, as the owner wanted to keep the through hull fittings to a minimum (no plumbed toilet either), but there is plenty of room for an esky under the beautifully crafted removable table, and a Porta Potti can fit in a dedicated place under the bunk. Headroom is 5'4".

Plenty of opening portholes and forward hatch (no leaks anywhere), will provide good cross-ventilation on a hot summer day, and can be kept partially open to keep the cabin dry and aired (important on timber yachts), when you leave the boat under her cover.
Perfect for a family as a beautiful and safe weekend get-away, 'Kestrel II', has a large V berth forward, which is easily accessed, and two good size single berths on either sides.

'Kestrel II' was fully surveyed in October 2014. The surveyor's report quotes "'KESTREL II' appears to have a sound, well-built hull and deck together with a very presentable fit-out.
The majority of the vessel components such as engines, the rig, the deck fittings and the sails, etc. Present well. The fault found were considered to be of a minor nature and would fit the parameters of normal maintenance and upgrading'. All the noted recommendations were carried out and repaired were necessary. The engine has since been replaced as the gearbox was corroding and the price of rebuilding it would have exceeded the purchase of a new reconditioned engine.
