Description: Custom Classic Timber Cruiser
Located at our Marina.

Here is a chance to own a 90 year old piece of Maritime history.

"Nyleta" was built in Cairns in 1927. And takes her name from an early mining community on the Atherton tablelands. It is also the birthplace of Mr R. T McManus who was chairman of the Cairns harbour board when the vessel was purchased and it was named Nyleta in his honour.

Before the second world war she was owned by the Cairns Harbour Board. She had a paid skipper and deckhand. During the second world war she was taken over by The Royal Australian Navy as 'naval patrol boat E15'. The E15 was painted battleship-grey and participated in numerous, highly secret, Navy, Army and Air Force operations in north.

"Nyleta" was originally power by a Southern Cross diesel engine with a wind up gear box. Today she is powered by a Perkins 4108,38HP, 4 Cylinder diesel which pushes her along at 8.5 knots.

1989 Nyleta was discovered abandoned on a vacant lot in Mackay by Craig & Brett Schionning who purchased the old girl for $2000 which included the boat, the engine, anchor, chain and two fire extinguishes. They spend the next 4 years stripping her down and completely restoring her.

From the waterline down she was copper sheathed. This was stripped off and helped finance the renovation. The hull was stripped back to bare timber and seams were cleaned out and spline were glued into the gaps. Four inch strips of 1/4 inch plywood was then glued and stapled diagonally over the hull. Unidirectional glass was then laid over the top. Internally she was totally striped out and new bulkheads and frames were fitted. State of the art unidirectional glass strips were also fitted down the hull for extra strength.

1998 Craig reluctantly sold Nyleta to her current owner and has been a popular boat here at the Southport Yacht Club over the last 20 years.
