As the second oldest boat builder in the US, Sea Ray knows how to build a boat that meets the perfect meld between style, function, quality and performance. The Sundancer 355 is certainly a testament to this ability. In the true definition of a "sports" "cruiser", the 355 doesn't compromise one for the other and in fact, it exceeds in both. With her striking sporty lines, two-tone colour scheme, full enclosed hardtop and thrilling performance thanks to her twin-turbo diesel engines producing 520hp she's certainly got the "sports" side covered. Throw in Accommodation for 4 adults, comfortable and spacious saloon, teak decking, generator and Air-Con and your "cruising" in comfort.
The modern palate creates the sense of luxury that Sea Ray is known to deliver but the quality of the fit-out on this 355 is incredible. The stainless fixtures and teak trimming in the cockpit give the 355 a modern coastal feel which is complemented by the beautifully upholstered seating throughout. Down below the saloon is flooded with natural light and high-end fixtures that Sea Ray has proven to withstand the test of time.
Rain hail or shine
It's not very often you get a fully enclosed hardtop on a Sport Cruiser of this size but wow it makes a difference. On those less than ideal days (which we've seen too many of lately) there's still no excuse with the fully moulded hardtop to keep you dry and secure. When the sun's out, simply open up the sunroof section and let the sun fill in and sea breeze roll through.
It's what the Sundancer 355 fits into 36 foot of boat that sets her apart. When it comes to the cockpit layout of this American sports cruiser, Sea Ray has done everything you could ask to make it a boat to be enjoyed with others. The aft section is all about hangtime with a wrap-around starboard side lounger complete with a folding table that converts to either a full dining or coffee table option. This becomes the epicentre of fun while kids fish or swim off the swim platform. The entire aft section is raised on hydraulic actuators for easy access to the engine room where the twin diesel engines, generator and other machinery are housed.
The forward area is all under the protection of the solid GRP hardtop, complete with a soft fabric sliding sunroof to let in extra light, fresh air and ventilation. To port is the well-equipped wet bar with refrigerator and bbq, Corian countertop, teak cutting board, sink, plus three drawers and one large storage area under the sink.
As you would expect, the dash is superbly designed for functionality as well as looks. Aesthetics are an important part of the Sea Ray culture and it shows. From the twin helm seats that both slide fore and aft and flip up to form bolster seats while underway at speed.
At the helm, all the instrumentation and controls are easy to monitor with the throttles and bow thruster at your fingertips. The almost optical illusion like single panel windscreen allows for incredible visibility forward and ties in the edgy lines externally. During our time on the water we had a few heavy rain squalls and the wipers proved their worth.
Sea Ray has again made great use of the available space down below with two separate cabins and a central lounge area for board games or kids hang space. The well-equipped galley is fitted with a fridge, microwave, electric hob, sink and prep space. The separate shower/head is accessed through a door to port aft and will provide a warm shower at the end of a long day on the water as well as a vaccuflush toilet, sink and vanity. The forward cabin is the perfect getaway as it's flooded with natural light and features a double island berth with a large storage area beneath, a hanging locker and horizontal storage shelves. The aft cabin also enjoys privacy through a separate door and provides for 2 couple accommodation onboard with a comfortable double bed, plenty of storage and a porthole back to the cockpit for fresh air. All of this in 36 foot of exhilarating luxury, this really is the perfect family weekender.

What we say
Having known this boat since new and sold it to her current owner I can assure you this family sports cruiser turns heads and packs a punch. Her navy hull and white hard top certainly catch your eye but once aboard the quality finish and luxurious feel quickly becomes evident. While underway she's comes into her own with her deep vee she slices and dices the chop like a knife. It's hard to find a late model boat with such low hours on the Australian market in this condition and I'm confident she won't disappoint.
