Laurie Ford had his mind set on competing in the 1999 Melbourne to Osaka, when he collaborated with Gary Cameron and Peter deLange to build a yacht that wasn't hindered by exisitng handicap rules, was easy to sail two handed, and would cope with a crew of 8. The hull shape is based on Gary Cameron's amazingly successful International 1 Metre Radio Controlled model, that is still succesful to this day.
Spirit of Downunder was expertly built by Peter deLange Boatworks in Mornington, Victoria, for Laurie Ford and launched in 1997. She was designed by Gary Cameron and built to exceed ABS (American Bureau of Shipping ) standards. At 80 years of age Laurie and his son Tim competed in the 2018 Melbourne to Osaka two handed race, ( the third time for Laurie ) but at 83 and following two years of lockdowns etc due to Covid 19 he has decided to sell his pride and joy of all these years past. There are attached detailed notes on the design, history and current specifications, along with some photos. The boat is being sold as is and includes all it's safety gear, tool kit, sail repair kit, etc., such that to go racing to Cat 1 there would be little to supply. Her race results are impressive.
