Description: Catalina 36 Mk II
The Catalina 36 is one of the most successful sailing yachts of all time, and the MK2 is the ultimate evolution of the series. The MK2 is a sophisticated, comfortable, safe and sea kindly yacht easily handled by a couple. The yacht tracks well and the moderate displacement hull provides a nice motion whilst underway in all sea conditions.
The construction is very solid, and with well over 2000 yachts constructed it's certainly a tried-and-true formula. The hull is solid fibreglass, 25mm thick at the centreline, the deck is hand laid and the hull/deck joint has an overlapping flange, bonded, and bolted. The fin keel is lead with integrally cast stainless steel keel bolts.
The cockpit is huge with bench seats long enough to stretch out on comfortable cockpit cushions. The large double leaf cockpit table is a treat, and the princess seats (with speakers) is a wonderful place to relax but also provides good vantage points while underway. All lines run to the cockpit, and with in-mast furling and a furling headsail, sailing is a breeze. The walkthrough transom, wide rung ladder and shower makes swimming very enjoyable. The large and robust wheel allows for easy steering in all conditions and is aided by a robust and reliable Raymarine autopilot. The wind, depth, log, chartplotter and radar are by Raymarine. The clears and Bimini are in excellent condition; the Bimini has robust stainless steel handholds for safety. All hatches, halyard and sheet winches, anchor winch, wheel, electronics, dinghy, outboard and wash boards have custom made Sunbrella covers in excellent condition.
The anchor locker contains a pressure saltwater hose, 45m of 8mm chain and a 35lb Manson anchor all in excellent condition. The locker is big enough to house a second anchor. Stored onboard is a secondary Manson 36lb anchor with 20m 8mm chain and 20m of brand new 16mm nylon anchor line for redundancy. The electric Maxwell anchor winch is in excellent order.
The saloon has headroom of 6' 5" and is in as-new condition throughout. The u-shaped galley has a 2-burner stove/oven in immaculate condition, dry food storage locker, microwave, fridge, freezer and a dual sink. The nav station has a handy swivel chair which tucks out of the way when not in use. The stern bunk is huge; 2m wide and over 2m long, and as with the large V-berth, the mattresses are innersprung, extremely comfortable and in as-new condition. The cabin has a handy game table and a fold away main table providing a functional interior. Storage includes a vast array of drawers, cupboards and hanging space. The woodwork and flooring are as-new.
The Universal 35hp diesel engine has low hours (850) and is in top notch condition. The heat exchanger has been reconditioned as part of the cooling system overhaul (Dec 2020), together with a gearbox service, all new hoses and belts, engine anodes replacement, new temperature gauge and sender unit, air filter and new thermostat. A new fuel filter was recently installed. Service on the engine and gearbox is in line with manufacturer recommendations. In short, the engine will not let you down at sea. The start battery (1*N70) and house batteries (2*145Ah) are in good condition. The Balmar high output alternator charges the batteries together with the 2*80-watt solar panels. The engine and galley seacocks have been professionally replaced when the yacht was antifouled, with prop speed applied and the hull highly polished (May 2022). The yacht also comes with a "kiwi" folding propellor. The bathroom has a shower, hot/cold mixer tap and a brand-new electric toilet (May 2022).
The mainsail is in good condition, the Genoa is as new, and a spare headsail is in good condition. The yacht comes with a Highfield tender with custom cover and outboard, all new in 2017 and in excellent condition. The anodised mast and Schaeffer 2100 furler are of top quality. Lewmar winches and hatches are standard, and the vang and deck hardware are Garhauer.
The Surveyors report in mid-2020 states, "Vessel is in 'as-new' condition and has been exceptionally well looked after", but the condition and reliability of the yacht has increased since this report. This yacht is in fantastic condition and turns heads wherever she goes. Fantastic Trio is awaiting the next adventure.
