Description: Challenger 36
PRICE REDUCTION now listed at $65,000! A Boat with all the extras..... "Pegasus" notes from previous owner to current who has kindly offered to go sailing with the new owner of this yacht,
Pegasus was designed by Nick Louis and built by Challenger Yachts in SA, and there were a number Challengers built and many are still around.
Her first owner was based in Melbourne, and built Pegasus originally with the intention of joining the Melbourne to Osaka race, which is a two handed ocean race. Due to this Pegasus is set up for short handed sailing with all lines back to the cockpit, and is set up for racing sailing (as it was at that time), with lots of winches, and a rig which is quite tuneable to get speed.

It is the short masted version, and this means it is predictable and manageable in higher winds. The rig adjustments include tensioning backstay which allows the forstay tension to be increased in higher winds, and the mainsail has a trevellor to adjust sail twist, and mast can be bent in the centre (about the width of the mast) by tensioning the inner forestay so as to flatten the main sail.

It was sailed in it's early days in ocean races out of Melbourne, and there are some plaques within the boat recording the races.

It was later based in at the Gold coast and one year featured on the cover of Cruising Helmsman magazine (there may be a copy on board).

I brought the boat from Nick Rich when it was moored at the Southport Yacht Club Swing mooring.

I owned the boat for about 15 years and both did a number of upgrades and sailed both coastally and internationally.

As well as various maintenance and replacements I set the boat up so it had the navigation equipment, power supply and autopilots to sail coastally and internationally including being able to easily single hand the yacht.

During my time I sailed it coastally North to the Whitsundays, and South to Tasmania. Internationally I sailed to Vanuatu and Fiji. The longest passages were 10 days Brisbane to Vanunatu, and 10 days return Fiji to Australia.

Work I did on the boat in this time included:

Electrical - 400AH of AGM batteries, Wind gen and Solar, larger alternator. The vessel will sail offshore with autopilot and fridge on indefinitely, and likewise is self sufficient in power at anchor.

Auto Pilot - a powerful hydraulic ram, connected to the Raymarine pilot is very reliable, and will steer the vessel in most conditions.

Navigation - Digital Yacht AIS allows wifi connection to an Ipad, so other vessels can be located and avoided. There is a small chartplotter at the helm which allows single handed navigation into ports at night from the helm. I navigated with the addition of an ipad downstairs with navionics.

Mast and Boom - this was removed, painted and rewired.

Windows and Hatches - replaced to ensure no water leaks.

Interior - refurbished interior including new ceaser stone benchtops.

Engine - head was removed, all cooling ports cleaned out, and injectors replaced. Due Racor fuel filter system installed. Engine was reliable when I last owned it, and went to Tasmania and back with no issues.

Sails - replaced and new spinnaker added.

Pegasus sails really well, it will sail to windward well too.
......... Integral fin keel and all the cruising gear to take you around Australia or the Pacific Islands. Previous owner had for fifteen years and consistantly upgraded all aspects including electronics, teak in the cockpit, new interior timberwork and ceasar stone bench tops, stainless steel targa/bimini/davits combination on the stern for his voyages to Fiji, Vanuatu. There is a comfortable well ventilated double V-berth forward to sleep in at achor and two double quarter berths aft. The bathroom is forward to port and is equiped with a hot shower, toilet and wash basin. The spacious saloon has an excellent pilot berth to starboard and a U-shaped settee to port. The cockpit has room to relax at anchor and the sailing sytems are easy to work from this space A large sail wardrobe with a tidy and well maintained cabin and deck.
