ZEN DOG | Chamberlin 1550
Zen Dog is a 2010 Chamberlin 1550, famous for the exceptional integrity of multihull design by one of Australia's most respected and established designers, Robin Chamberlin.
Designed by Robin at the owner's request, Zen Dog's design is loosely based on the renowned Chamberlin Nimbus design but featuring extra payload capability. She is a stunning yacht that comprises the features of the best multihulls; the excellent bridgedeck clearance provides a smooth, uncompromised ride in all conditions, especially to windward. Weight distribution is centred with the shaft driving engines and tankage amidships and the collision bulkheads and watertight compartments in the three metres of the bows and sterns.
Well-designed steps, safe decks and hand-holds are also a great feature. Foam sandwich construction with vinylester resin and laid knitted fibreglass construction gives stiffness, durability and lightness.
The look and feel of this boat is BIG, but the handling is easy thanks to the simplicity of design of the rig and the hardware layout. The owner has sailed alone for the last three years and has found her an easy vessel to handle, including the berthing with the engines driving powerful four-bladed folding props. The cockpit helm position gives great visibility and is totally protected from inclement weather. Zen Dog provides great sailing for the cold latitudes and minimising sun exposure.
The layout is designed primarily for a couple to go extended [world] cruising with occasional friends visiting or maybe a child or two. The large easy-to-move-around-in cockpit can be fully enclosed with a mixture of screens or clears to provide a weatherproof living area.
All internal living areas are insulated and lined with a stunning imported vinyl and the cabins are finished in a Queensland Silver Ash veneer. Custom mattresses are supported on Euro-slat bed bases design giving superb comfort, while the furniture is fitted with folding doors and drawers on soft-close systems giving an apartment feeling.
The combination of LED lighting and carbon fibre trims adds to the luxury. Two stunningly finished bathrooms, one in each hull, have separate showers with glass shower doors. High gloss metallic paint finishes complement the vanities.
The large galley is in the starboard hull but is open to the full length of the saloon allowing interaction with the guests and providing a servery. The galley is finished in stainless steel making it easily maintained and exudes a sleek commercial aesthetic. Fridges, microwave, dishwasher, and oven are all at waist height, giving superb accessibility. The galley in the starboard hull flows forward to a cabin that is totally fitted as a pantry with all the storage a chef could want for extended passage making.
The performance of Zen Dog is excellent, whether under engines, motor sailing or going to windward. Pointing high, it creates apparent wind and will achieve 7-9 knots in 12-16 knots true (well out-performing the bareboat charter multihulls). For example, one engine motor in calm waters at 2200rpm will give 8 knots. Fuel consumption is minimal varying from under three litres per hour to eight litres per hour.
Zen Dog's new owner will not be disappointed. She is simply a stunning yacht that attracts regular compliments and will get her guests safely out of port and back again in total comfort.
This is a true world-cruising craft designed for ability, safety and amazing comfort at sea. She is ready to just step aboard and sail away.... "Bring an offer!"
