NEW Beneteau First 30

The Beneteau First 30 introduces a new concept in modern sailing, positioned as a "planing cruiser", a yacht designed to deliver genuine performance while remaining accessible and practical to use. Developed with naval architect Samuel Manuard and the Seascape team, it combines lightweight construction, modern hull design and simplified systems to make high-speed sailing more achievable for everyday owners.

At around 10 metres, the First 30 is aimed at sailors who want a boat that is fast, responsive and engaging, but still capable of overnighting and short coastal cruising without the complexity of a full race yacht.

The deck layout is built around efficient sailing and minimal clutter. The cockpit is wide and open, with two distinct configurations available, one optimised for cruising comfort and one set up for racing.

In cruising configuration, the mainsheet system is arranged to keep the cockpit floor clear, which makes a noticeable difference when moving around onboard or using the space socially. For racing, a more traditional traveller setup is available, allowing finer sail control and trim.

The boat uses a modern hull shape with twin rudders, improving control and stability at higher speeds, particularly when the boat is planing. This is a key feature, as the design is intended to allow sailors to experience sustained speeds above traditional displacement limits with greater confidence.

Deck hardware and winch sizing have been selected to reduce physical effort, making sail handling manageable for a smaller crew without sacrificing performance capability.

Below deck, the First 30 is designed to remain functional without adding unnecessary weight. The layout provides accommodation for up to four people across two cabins, which is practical for overnighting or short trips.

The forward cabin is relatively generous for a boat of this size, while additional berths in the saloon offer flexibility when sailing with crew. Standing headroom of around 1.85m is available in key areas, which is notable in a performance-focused 30-footer.

The galley is compact but usable, typically including a gimballed stove and optional refrigeration, allowing for basic meal preparation on passage. Storage solutions are designed to be adaptable, including removable lockers and foldable components to maximise usable space.

Importantly, the boat includes a proper enclosed marine bathroom (head), which adds a level of practicality often missing in performance-oriented yachts of this size.

The defining feature of the First 30 is its ability to plane, lifting and accelerating beyond traditional hull speed when conditions allow. This type of performance has historically been limited to more specialised racing yachts, but the First 30 is designed to make it achievable for a much broader range of sailors.

Its lightweight structure, modern hull form and efficient sail plan allow the boat to accelerate quickly and maintain speed, even with a small crew. At the same time, stability and control have been prioritised, with twin rudders and balanced handling helping the boat remain predictable at higher speeds.

Sail systems are intentionally simplified, allowing the boat to be sailed effectively without requiring a large or highly experienced crew. This makes it suitable for both experienced sailors looking for performance and newer owners wanting to step into a more engaging style of sailing.

The result is a boat that can be sailed competitively, enjoyed for fast day sailing, or used for short coastal cruising, all without needing to compromise heavily in any one area.
