Australian Navy AWB

About 40 foot Army Workboats

40' Army Workboats were designed and built commencing World War 2 as a general
support vessel for marine defense operations. The original purpose of the 40' Workboats was
to support the Australian Defense operations including the islands to the North of Australia. The
workboats were designed by Jack Botterill (South Melbourne) and construction
commenced in 1942 with builds continuing until circa 1963.
Over 400 40 foot Workboats were built for use by the Australian Army, Airforce, Navy
and the Royal Navy. Builders during the war years included General Motors and
Ford Motor Company along with many smaller builders in all States.
