For Sale: Classic 1942 Moreton Bay Cruiser "Irene"
Here's a rare chance for a wooden boat enthusiast to own a truly special piece of Australian maritime history. Irene is a 13.7-metre (45") Moreton Bay Cruiser, built in 1942 by the legendary CE Crowley Shipbuilders in Brisbane. Originally commissioned as a pilot vessel, she served the Queensland Department of Harbours and Marine in Innisfail for over 40 years. After her retirement as a Pilot vessel in the early 80's, Irene was purchased by Chris Mews and transported over to Perth. She remained part of the Mews family for 38 years until purchased by her current owners in 2021.
In March 2025 Irene has undergone significant restoration, including a full out-of-water refit, hull work, new antifouling, and a complete resealing of the main deck -- a $50,000 investment by her current owners. She's powered by a 75HP 1956 Ruston diesel engine, economical to run and full of character.
Onboard, Irene blends classic charm with modern comfort. The main saloon features a large dining area that converts into a king-sized bed, with a toilet, shower, and ample storage. The forward galley includes a 3-burner gas stove, electric fridge, and two single berths -- once the skipper's quarters. Her spacious aft deck is ideal for entertaining, with wrap-around seating and room to relax in style.
