Mariner 3400 Flybridge

Springer is a wonderful example of the Mariner 3400 - the design that gave birth to Riviera and Maritimo - arguably the ultimate cruising, fishing, family and socialising design concept.

Powered by twin Volvo TAMD41s, these are the higher power option installed at the factory, rated at 200hp each. With shaft drives turning 4-blade props, these give excellent performance and reliability, along with easy maintenance.

The boat and engines have been extremely well cared for and maintained since being delivered to her first owner in circa 1988 from the Mona Vale factory to the Royal Motor Yacht Club of Toronto on Lake Macquarie.

She made her way to her current Hobart location via 4 subsequent owners, each of whom have maintained her to a high standard.

A large enclosed forward v-berth, and an enclosed double berth to starboard provides accommodation at a level of comfort you'd expect to find in much larger boats.

Slightly forward of mid-ships to port is the neatly-designed fully enclosed shower and head. The shower is fully-enclosed which is a bonus in a boat of this size in that the head and vanity basin/unit don't also become part of the shower experience. The toilet is a quality electric flushing model, with an almost brand-new flush/macerator unit which provides very effective and reliable operation. The vanity unit of course has a very useable wash basin with hot and cold water. Hot water for the boat is provided by a very effective engine heat-exchanger.

The in-built settee in the saloon also converts into a comfortable king single bed, brining the accommodation capacity to five.

The roomy galley to port provides a comfortable level of space for preparing meals, and includes a 4-burner gas top stove with gas oven under. There is also plenty of storage for cutlery, crockery and all your provisions for extended trips with family or friends.

The saloon provides a wonderful place to relax at anchor and underway, with comfortable seating for 4 - 7 adults including the captain. The helm-station in the saloon provides the captain with exceptional 360 degree vision. Included are full black-out external window covers for all saloon windows. These provide excellent sun-protection and privacy both when berthed and in-use for overnight stays.

The aft-cockpit provides ample room for a range of liesure options, from fishing to swimming and diving. (Named Springer by her original Lake Macquarie owner, this is a hint at her capability in helping those aboard to find and retrive quality game!) In-line with her early game-fishing use, she has outrigger attachments ready to accommodate these if you wish to set her up to go 'springing' the big-ones once more.

A doorway through the transom to port provides simple hassel-free access to the swim platform. Accessing the boat from the water is easy thanks to the fold-down swim ladder to starboard. There is a fresh cold water swim shower at the aft-cockpit perfect for a post swim shower, and to keep the cockpit washed down.

The flybridge provides an exceptional place from which to helm the boat, no matter what the weather. Springer was delivered with the very desireable hard-top option, and has full clears all-round. The flybridge layout is basically identical to most of the Rivieras of similar and much larger sizes - a design that is genius in its simplicity of form and function. The helm is located at the very aft of the flybridge, with forward-facing seating forward of the helm for passengers. This provides exceptional visibility for the captain - perfect for maneuvering into your marina berth, under-way and especially if putting the boat in the right place for sport-fishing. (The captain has a direct view to the aft-cockpit without leaving the helm chair.

There is an excellent auto-helm system, with controls at both helm stations. The system provides exceptional course-keeping in all conditions. On the flybridge is an excellent Lowrance chart-plotter. There is a uniden marine UHF radio at each helm station, each with its own flybridge hard-top mounted antenna. In the saloon is a bluetooth audio system linked to speakers in the saloon and on the flybridge. The system includes a separate amplifier and provides excellent audio quality. The cieling mounted smart tv in the saloon can also be run through this system.

She has enjoyed a full service to both engines within the past three months, by Hughes Marine - Volvo Penta specialists. The engines have seen 2091 hours and 2152 hours for port and starboard respectively, and thanks to their lifetime of responsible ownership have alot of reliable care-free boating ahead of them.

The anchor is managed by a Muir vertical drum windlass. This provides extremely efficient and reliable use of the anchor. The windlass motor and gearbox have just been replaced and the entire unit serviced by a Muir specialist.

Springer has been a simply wonderful family cruising boat, giving total reliability for our mix of in-shore and offshore cruising around south-eastern Tasmania. If and when you test her out in challenging offshore sea-states, she will always provide a confidence-inspiring feel at the helm of being planted and straight-tracking. Bill Barry-Cotter certainly created a boat that gives you confidence to willingly take on a challenging offshore passage, and the comfort to relax for a few nights at the end of it!

The value these Mariner 3400s present is truly exceptional. Functionally, these boats give you everything that the similar size Rivieras give you, in some cases for $100,000 less. They look, behave and deliver the same exceptional boating experience as bigger, more expensive boats. Their Volvo Penta power supply is perfect for the job.
