Arc-en-ciel (French for 'rainbow') is a very well presented family cruiser and one of only three Len Randell-designed 36' Precision Marine vessels, originally purpose-built to Limited survey (10 tonne displacement) for the Department of Transport as a Marshall vessel controlling spectator craft during the 1987 America's Cup defence off Fremantle.
She's been owned by the same family since 1989 - 37 years and counting - and has delivered three decades-plus of Rottnest runs and Garden Island days out.
NOW REDUCED TO $90,000
Underway she has a top speed of 15 knots and cruises very economically on the plane at 12 knots. Built to survey, she's a solid, honest boat that's stood the test of time. Her engine room is clean and tidy, housing twin 200HP Volvo Penta diesel shaft drives, with a keel offering protection for the running gear, added stability and reduced mooring swing.
The rear deck features a well-insulated icebox, low-maintenance non-slip fibreglass flooring, a hot water deck shower and a factory-fitted transom door, with a shade awning covering three-quarters of the space.
A ladder links the cockpit to the flybridge helm, with seating for a handful of guests to keep the skipper company. Nav gear is basic, but let's be honest - Rottnest and Garden Island are line of sight anyway. A soft-top bimini and clears keep the elements out.
The saloon is where this pocket rocket really shines. Large opening windows bring in plenty of light and breeze, and the traditional layout is genuinely functional and spacious, with seating for a crowd and a mezzanine galley that keeps the chef in the conversation. A lower helm station is fitted but rarely used, and a clever cabinet to starboard hides the bar out of sight until the party starts.
Arc-en-ciel had a few features well ahead of their time. Beyond the transom door and galley layout, the forward master stateroom features an island-style double berth - a configuration other designers didn't adopt for years. Thanks, Len.
Constructed in hand-laid fibreglass/GRP, the underside of the hull was completely stripped back, re-primed and anti-fouled in 2019, with no evidence of osmosis throughout her life.
