Description: Adams 12
A fine seagoing Joe Adams design. It was originally designed as a racer-cruiser or fast cruiser, but is also a comfortable live aboard. The yacht has been extensively set up to sail efficiently and safely single-handed. Against All Odds was awarded with a Performance Certificate for "The First Singlehanded Circumnavigation of Australia" which was achieved with one stop, by the World Sailing Speed Record Council (International Sailing Federation) in 2006.(Performance Certificate number 23 WSSRC website). It was strengthened and systems significantly beefed up for the Record attempt. It is fast, strong, safe, fun to sail and performs well on all points of sail, and in all conditions.

The interior is comfortable and attractive, white with mahogany trim and mahogany wood panels. There are plenty of cupboards and storage areas. The saloon is spacious, light and airy and a great entertaining area. There is good headroom throughout. The sleeping is comfortable with 3 double cabins.

This Adams 12 has a tall, powerful, fractional rig with fully battened main and is still sailing in light conditions when other yachts are motoring. Reefing the mainsail is simple and doesn't require moving from sitting in the cockpit and is achieved in a couple of minutes with no fuss and low effort. The yacht is usually sailed solo by a woman and often cruises north annually. The keel, being of shallower draft, allows for accessing more anchorages than a deep fin, while the lead wing bulb keeps it stiff in heavy conditions, and was designed to enhance performance going to windward.

This year, Against All Odds has just had the interior repainted and revarnished and has been freshly antifouled. Other recent upgrades include: a new Yanmar fresh water cooled motor (2020); new dodger (2021); new Polycarbonate (Lexan) windows (2022-3); new Highfield Ultralight Hypalon 2.6 m rigid inflatable dinghy (2020); new Plastimo compass (2022); new TMC electric toilet with replaced plumbing (2023); new anchor windlass motor and electrics and remote control (2021); new Lithium Phosphate battery bank, Victron solar controller, and added new 170 watt solar panel (2021); replaced seacocks and some skin fittings 2021 and 2023; new high load Harken ball bearing sheave for main halyard (2021); just had radar mount re powder coated; new cockpit seats (2020).

Against All Odds has also been a very comfortable live aboard for cruising and would be also be suitable for club and offshore fully-crewed or short-handed racing. The yacht has been a special boat and has had one owner for the last 21 years. She is well maintained and in great condition and is ready to untie the lines and just go sailing.

Against All Odds is berthed at Mooloolaba Marina on the Sunshine Coast and her 12m berth will also be available for sale.

Remarks
It has a taller and more powerful rig than most Adam 12s, and is fractional. Earlier Adam 12s were commonly masthead rigs. This selection by the first owner, after discussions with Joe Adams, resulted in a slightly smaller genoa, thus easier to handle, with a bigger mainsail that is simple to reef without moving from the cockpit. So it is faster, especially in light air and very managable in heavy conditions and great for safe and efficient short-handed sailing. The first owner worked closely with the designer, Joe Adams who was excited with this project, on using the bigger fractional rig as well as a more open plan interior with 3 full double cabins with independent doors to the aft cabins. It has no tight access walkways like on the earlier Adams 12s. The addition of the inner forestay on the Highfield lever in 2005 also allows the boat to be sailed as a cutter (2 headsails). It also allows the stay to be detached from the deck and moved aft simply with the Highfield lever if one wishes to have the foredeck clear. She has a comfortable motion at sea and sits well to anchor.

Against All Odds was mostly used by the first and second owners, successfully, for club and some east coast racing. The current owner, since circumnavigating Australia solo, has mostly enjoyed cruising in Against All Odds. This yacht is versatile and has also proven to be a fast cruiser, pleasurable to sail, comfortable to live aboard and easy to manage single-handedly.
