Chinook II is a proven & exceptionally well-built bluewater cruiser; a real 4×4 of the sea. Constructed in steel to a high standard and commissioned from the outset as a world-voyaging yacht, she was designed for safe, comfortable and self-sufficient offshore living. Her layout, systems and structure reflect that serious purpose, with an emphasis on strength, ease of handling and dependable seakeeping. She has been well cared for throughout her life, and this care is evident when stepping aboard. With a cutter rig, enclosed centre cockpit, generous diesel and water stores, and a warm, practical interior, Chinook II is a vessel designed & ready for extended cruising.
On deck, she carries a versatile cutter rig that offers a range of balanced sail combinations for varying conditions. Both the headsail and staysail are on roller furlers, with all sheets and furling lines led safely back to the cockpit. The fully battened mainsail runs on a Harken Battcar track system that allows the sail to drop cleanly when the halyard is released--an important feature when reefing in heavy weather. A Selden boom and rodkicker, upgraded with a new gas strut in 2024, support the system, and a new boom bag and lazyjacks installed the same year make stowing the mainsail easy and tidy. All halyards and reefing lines are handled from the protection of the fully enclosed dodger and bimini, ensuring that sail handling remains safe and comfortable offshore.
The centre cockpit provides excellent shelter, with wheel steering, a Plastimo compass and engine controls close at hand. Raytheon ST-60 instruments display wind, depth and boat speed, and a Course Master autopilot handles the helm offshore. Four storage lockers and a handheld shower add practicality at anchor. Deck movement is secure thanks to full stainless handrails, and her ground tackle is thoroughly over-specified, with 80 metres of chain, a 27 kg Manson Supreme anchor and an oversized electric Lofrans Fortress windlass. The stainless anchor locker is positioned behind a watertight collision bulkhead for safety at sea. Built in heavy-duty steel, with a 6 mm hull and 4 mm deck, Chinook II has the solid feel of a true passagemaker, further strengthened by her 18-ton displacement, which provides a steady, comfortable motion in rough weather. Across the transom, strong stainless davits carry the dinghy and support the solar array & wind generator that keep the batteries charged. A man-overboard pole and a SeaSafe four-person liferaft are mounted on the aft deck.
Below deck, warm timber joinery gives the interior a traditional, inviting feel, and generous headroom accommodates crew over six feet tall. To port, the galley is well laid-out for offshore cooking, offering ample storage along with a Tecma two-burner gimballed stove and oven, a Waeco 12-volt fridge positioned in the passageway, and 400 litres of water stored across two tanks. Opposite the galley, the navigation station sits at the base of the companionway for quick access while underway. It includes two GPS units, Furuno radar, ICOM HF and VHF radios, an Inmarsat satellite phone, and an ICOM SSB radiotelephone, along with the main 12-volt electrical switchboard. Additional onboard systems include an Eberspacher Airtronic D2 diesel heater for warmth in colder climates, a Boat-Boiler hot water system heated by the engine, and electric bilge pumps in the fore and aft bilges, each with on/off/auto control.
Chinook II was repowered in 2005 with a Sabre Perkins M92 diesel engine, now showing 2,710 hours. Recently serviced and lightly used--averaging around 135 hours per year--it remains in excellent mechanical condition and is easily accessed via removable panels in the galley, aft passageway and companionway steps. Her propulsion system includes a new PSS shaft seal fitted in 2024, a 90-amp alternator, and a 22-inch Gori three-blade self-feathering propeller for efficient motoring. She carries 800 litres of diesel in four interconnected tanks and received four new 105-amp-hour batteries in 2025. Solar panels and a wind generator ensure ample renewable charging, and the main battery switches and bus bars are housed neatly in the aft passage.
Accommodation is comfortable and practical for offshore passages, with berths for four or more. A large aft cabin features a king-sized bed and a private manual toilet, while the forward V-berth offers generous storage. The main saloon includes two settees that make good sea berths and a fold-away table mounted at the mast that seats four. The main head includes an electric macerating toilet and a handheld shower, providing all the amenities needed for extended time aboard. Storage throughout the saloon and cabins allows for long-term provisioning without clutter.
Built strong for world cruising and clearly maintained with care, Chinook II is a capable and well equipped passage-maker. With systems set up for a singlehander, yet still having the space for a small family planning extended voyaging or liveaboard life. Australian-registered and ready for international travel, she is over-engineered where it counts and fully prepared to take her next owners wherever they may choose.
