The Alubat Ovni 435 is a robust, aluminum-hulled sailboat designed for long-distance, "blue water" cruising. It is classified Category A Ocean. Built in France at Alubat in Les Sables-d'Olonne Ovnis are well known for their sea worthiness, strength and versatility. Ovnis are often called the "4x4 of the seas". Key features include a retractable lifting keel and rudder for shallow-water access (see photo of Mirabooka anchored in the Aitutaki Lagoon in the Cook Islands) and a strong fully welded aluminium hull and deck with integrated fuel and water tanks.
Ovnis are capable offshore cruisers suitable for sailors undertaking extensive off-shore voyages. They are fast and comfortable yachts, and have been proven all over the world, including by Jimmy Cornell who sailed to the Antarctic in an Ovni 43.
The main cabin is very spacious with an excellent, practical well equipped galley and excellent stowage for long distance self sufficiency.
'Mirabooka' has had only 2 owners. The original owners were a group of Italian friends, who commissioned her and sailed from Genoa, Italy to Bundaberg, Australia via an Atlantic crossing, the Caribbean, the Panama Canal, and the Pacific. (She was then named 'Calypso Music').
The current owners are a group of Australian friends who purchased her in 2013 in Bundaberg, and have sailed her extensively along the East Coast of Australia and Tasmania and spent 7 years in the Pacific, visiting New Zealand, The Cook Islands, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji and New Caledonia.
She has been meticulously maintained by the current owners, including 2 engineers (one electrical and one mechanical/spar rigging designer) and a craftsman and is in excellent condition. There are comprehensive motor, electrical, plumbing and hydraulic tools, spare and equipment. All work done is recorded in a detailed maintenance log.
Other points of interest:
o The rigging is over sized and been regularly checked and replaced as necessary.
o The anodic protection works well and is long lasting. The leakage meter shows no leakage, and the hull potential as measured using a calibrated silver anode is within specifications.
o Both the original and current owners have sailed her for about 30-40% of the year and laid her up out of the water for the rest of the year to reduce wear and tear.
o Fuel tanks have always been left full, and water tanks empty when laid up. Fuel filters have never clogged up.
o The engine has always been serviced on schedule. It is a non standard Yanmar 75HP, rather than the usual Volvo 55HP.
o The stove was replaced in 2024, and the windlass in 2019. The house battery bank was replaced in 2024 with 5 Victron AGM 125 Ah batteries.
o The liferaft storage on the cabintop freed up a large stern locker.
o Floors can be locked down during ocean passages.
o 'Mirabooka' is an Australian registered ship (No. 861242), with all duties paid.
Mirabooka is in excellent seaworthy condition and fully equipped (right down to the tea towels!), ready to take its new owners on their next blue-water adventure.
