Proven Pedigree
Blue Moon was designed by the late Professor Peter Joubert AM, one of Australia's most respected naval architects, also known for the iconic Currawong 31, Brolga 33, and Magpie 34. Joubert's designs are famed for their seaworthiness -- the Currawong 31 won the 1981 Sydney to Hobart.
Built by master shipwright Geoff Baker, a pioneer in GRP boat construction during the 1970s and '80s, Blue Moon showcases the hallmarks of his over-specified, high-quality craftsmanship. Her solid GRP hull features a fully encapsulated keel and remains osmosis-free -- a testament to her build quality and care over the decades.
A Yacht with Real History
Commissioned in 1977 by Warren Andersen with the goal of rounding Cape Horn, Blue Moon was tested in the 1977 Sydney to Hobart -- surviving a dismasting and sailing into Eden under jury rig. Her rig was upgraded shortly after and again in 2022, when all standing rigging was replaced. Most spars were retained and professionally inspected as "near new. "
As part of the 2022 refit, we also:
o Rebuilt and regalvanised the main transverse beam, which carries the mast and rigging loads
o Refastened all deck fittings to ensure maximum strength and watertight integrity
Blue Moon has participated in multiple offshore races over the years and carries a record of medals and passages that speak to her capability. But she is just as well-suited to long-range cruising.
Engineer-Owned and Refitted
I purchased Blue Moon seven years ago with the goal of refitting her for safe, long-range solo cruising. She is the second Cape
Barren goose I have owned over the years. As a marine engineer with over 40 years' experience, I undertook a complete systems overhaul with safety, self-sufficiency, and structural robustness in mind.
She is registered with AMSA as a ship, allowing for international voyages. Though easily capable of accommodating a family, I fitted her primarily for short-handed sailing, with a flexible interior layout and extensive equipment fit-out.
Design Features & Highlights
o Cutter-rigged blue water cruiser with deep, safe centre cockpit
o Generous aft cabin and well-proportioned saloon
o Solid GRP construction, encapsulated keel - no osmosis
o Full rig replacement in 2022
o Transverse mast beam rebuilt and regalvanised
o Deck fittings fully re-bedded and fastened
o Fully refitted systems by marine engineer owner
o AMSA-registered for international cruising
o Well-balanced for solo or short-handed sailing
o Would also suit a small family seeking a yacht that is incredibly strong, safe, and proven offshore
Location & Extras
Blue Moon is currently moored off Clareville Beach, NSW. If sold locally, I'm happy to transfer the mooring apparatus to the new owner. The site is leased from NSW Maritime and can be transferred with their approval.
Reason for Sale
After seven wonderful years with Blue Moon, my sailing plans have shifted. With my family now joining me more often, we've purchased a larger catamaran. It's time for Blue Moon to begin her next chapter with someone who'll appreciate her heritage and potential as much as we have.
Please see attached Inventory for more information
Blue Moon is available for viewing at any time. She is located off Clareville beach. If interested, please feel free to contact me on my mobile to arrange an inspection. If I don't pick up, please leave a message.
