With her graceful lines, timber spars and distinctive gaff rig, CoutaTah carries on the tradition of Australia's wooden fishing boats. Her generous cockpit and traditional construction offer the simple pleasures of sailing a boat with character, whether sharing an afternoon with friends or exploring Sydney Harbour and Pittwater.
Couta boats developed along Victoria's southern coast during the nineteenth century, taking their name from the barracouta caught by their fishermen. Built to work the demanding waters of Port Phillip and Bass Strait, they combined broad hulls, centreplates and powerful gaff rigs to reach the fishing grounds and bring their catch home swiftly.
CoutaTah is a modern continuation of that working-boat heritage. Built in Berry, NSW, by Rhett Kelly and Chris Robinson to a Wooden Boatshop design, she was launched in 2005. Her carvel-planked Fijian kauri hull, celery-top pine ribs and spotted gum keel reflect the materials and craftsmanship at the heart of traditional wooden boatbuilding.
She has been enjoyed on Sydney Harbour and Pittwater, both for pleasure sailing and friendly competition. For those interested in joining the Couta racing community, she also has a successful club and regatta history.
