A fast, comfortable, no frills catamaran. What she lacks in frills she makes up for in big performance. This is a real sailing boat not a house on water. World proven.
Top speed 23kts on a beam reach (but we know she will go faster). Cruises comfortably between 12kts and 16 kts. Just completed a circumnavigation and come straight through from Greece in the last 18 months with the seasons.
Design Concepts of Southern Wing
Southern Wing is the concept of Philip Wise who has now sailed around the world twice and had his own ideas on a how to build a comfortable fast cruising catamaran. Phil also did not like the boxy designs that were coming out of the production boat area. He liked, what he calls, the female lines of sleek flowing curves, which also are the attributes of many sea creatures. Lines of the Sea he called them. Pretty lines.
So listed below are his ideas and reasons around why he built things his way.
First of all, his basic premise was that he wanted a boat that was fast and comfortable, lightweight, simple and reliable. His idea was... The more you rely on electrical items the greater the chance of things breaking down. Hence the reason for foot pumps instead of electrical pumps and solar panels instead of generators. With regard to weight, small portholes and hatches were far lighter than marine ones and a hanked on removable staysail instead of another weighty roller furler.
The hull to beam length ratio is close enough to 20-1
Overall length 60 foot. Water line 59 foot. Hull width 1 metre.
Daggerboard rudders to be able to sit aground on sandbanks.
One large centreboard because if you hit an underwater object or whale there is every change you still have one hull in tact. Also to give more room in the galley because of the narrow hulls.
Long narrow hulls for easy speed and comfort at anchor and at sea but roomy inside for living.
Long thin sterns for easy smooth exit of water flow from behind. As well as low buoyancy sterns to prevent the bow burying in rough seas.
Very high underwing clearance to prevent slamming in rough conditions both upwind and downwind which in turn assists in not impeding speed.
High cockpit aft beam to prevent boarding seas and for strength for mainsheet loads.
Four major beams to stop twisting and add to boat stiffness.
There are water tight compartments every metre below the waterline for safely in case of collision.
Bows have 3 water tight bulkheads in case of collision.
Sternas have several water tight bulkheads as well.
Tiller steering for direct feedback and simplicity resulting in easy light-weight handling.
Centralized weight distribution. All weight is centred around the mast. This includes the anchor being brought back to the mast and carried there when sailing; anchor chain locker and spare diesel/water jerry can locker, warps, batteries, food/tool storage are all aroung the mast.
Interior furniture in the wingdeck is built to support and stiffen the underwing and mast beam.
Large 95 sq mtr main, 47 sq mtr genoa, 110 sq mtr screecher, 25 sq mtr staysail, 140 sq mtr spinnaker, storm jib and trade wind sail.
Southern Wing was desined primarily for 2 people but has to comfortable forward double cabins. A large saloon with double day bunk, Office and large downstairs galley in the port hull and double bunk and onsuite in the starboard hull.
She has 2 Gori 3 blade folding props so as not to impede sailing speed and for motoring efficiency. 100% efficiency in forward and reverse as well as a motor sailing setting.
She has 2 Yanmar 3YM30 motors in their own water tight compartment.
Made out of composite fibreglass materials to suit the purpose of that part of the boat. She has carbon stiffening beams in the decks of both hulls.
