Designed by NZ designer Paul Whiting, and craftsman built by Alan Porter of AJ Porter Marine at Whangaparoa NZ in 1985. Sailaway was the second Paul Whiting 40 Alan Porter built. He liked the design of the first one so much he decided to build one for himself and had her for about six years. After selling her, the new owner sailed her around the Pacific for a number of years and then eventually to Australia where she was again sold. We bought her in 2012 at Pittwater. The same year we engaged Joe Walsh Rigging to renew the standing and running rigging, including complete refurbishment of the mast and replacing chainplates.
In 2016 we treated her to a major overhaul with Colin Beashel of Colin Beashel Marine on Pittwater.
The mast was removed, the rudder was removed, all deck fittings were removed, windows, hatches, winches, targa, stanchions, steering pedestal, tow rails, rubbing strips, everything. The teak decks were removed and replaced with top quality marine ply and fibreglassed. The armorglass windows were refurbished. Hatches were refurbished. The swim platform was rebuilt new. A completely new rudder and rudder stock was fabricated and fitted. A new fuel tank and a new water tank were fabricated and securely fitted. The keel join was exposed, checked and re-glassed. The 7 large 25mm bronze keel bolts were re-tensioned.
She was professionally painted with Awlgrip and then all fittings, hatches windows etc were re-installed. The mast, boom and rigging were checked thoroughly while out and then the mast was re-stepped.
Sailaway was re-launched in Jan 2017 after five months of professional attention in Colin Beashel's shed.
Sailaway is a beautiful boat (a work of art) and fun to sail. She handles all conditions without vices. The engine is reliable and does not leak oil but is showing some smoke mostly until warmed up. The rigging was last professionally inspected in 2018 and has been accepted for re-insurance by Nautilus Marine Insurance for another 12 months (a rig check will be required by Sep next year).
We lived on her for five years 2018-23 while sailing the east coast of Australia and have owned her for over 13 years.
