Dick Zaal is a Dutch naval architect who began his career as a carpenter at the Van de Stadt boatyard, later becoming a designer there. In 1980 he founded his own design office in Hoorn, Netherlands. Over his long career he created many successful yachts, including several notable models built by Contest Yachts.
The Zeevink (Design 55b) is a centreboard yacht equipped with a folding rudder. With a minimum draft of just 0.63 m, it can navigate extremely shallow waters and can be safely beached or dried out while resting on its own keel. When the centreboard is lowered, the draft increases to about two metres, greatly enhancing upwind performance.
'Oxide' is built in rugged aluminium with 5 mm plating on the deck and topsides and a 10 mm bottom. Aluminium hulls offer an excellent strength-to-weight ratio, are tough and impact-resistant, and require very little maintenance.
Oxide has a cutter rig with a removable inner forestay. This is a highly versatile rig configuration, allowing for multiple efficient sail combinations to suit a wide range of wind and sea conditions.
Oxide is well equipped for extended cruising, with onboard systems designed for simplicity, reliability, and ease of use.
Electrical demands are well catered for with a solar panel and wind generator. The primary battery bank consists of two high-quality Fullriver AGM batteries, supplemented by a lithium battery box integrated into the system via a DC-DC charger.
The L-shaped galley on the port side offers an impressive amount of storage. It includes a large pantry accessible through the benchtop, a spacious cupboard under the sinks, and numerous additional cupboards and drawers. The galley is fitted with a high-quality SMEV stove/oven/grill, dual stainless steel sinks, and cold water supplied via a simple, reliable foot pump.
There is accommodation for up to five adults, with an owner's cabin forward featuring a double berth, two single or sea berths in the saloon, and a single quarter berth aft.
The bathroom features an electric TMC toilet with a holding tank below, emptied via a manual bilge pump. There is a gravity-fed shower, with water supplied from a deck-mounted tank filled using the manual bilge pump--another excellent example of simple, reliable manual systems.
