*We would really love this boat to go to a good home, if you are that person please feel free to get in touch for a chat or feel free to make an offer*

Weekends on the Swan just wouldn't be the same without seeing the RPYC fleet on the river with the distinctive red and white striped hull of Hitchhiker invariably in the leading group.

After 43 years, Peter Briggs' Hitchhiker is looking for a new home.

Hitchhiker was designed to win the 1981 Admiral's Cup for Australia. The design established the reputation of young South American designer German Frers who went on to become one of the elite designers of the 1980s and 1990s.

Construction of the yacht was overseen by Bill Edgerton with experienced shipwrights Phil Bate and Colin Beashel working on the project in a shed at the Brookvale industrial area in Sydney.

State-of-the-art materials of the time were used: a sandwich construction of Kevlar and a Klegecell sandwich foam. The yacht took 17 weeks to build, and it contested the Dunhill Selection Trials to decide the team for the 1981 Admiral's Cup. Hitchhiker was the only Australian yacht to be built for the trials with Kevlar sandwich technology.

Hitchhiker emerged as the form yacht in the trials and earned the top-ranking. The crew was joined in the Australian team by Alan Bond's Apollo V and Syd Fischer's Ragamuffin. They had high hopes of repeating the success of the 1979 Admiral's Cup which was won by Australia. After leading the event they eventually came home seventh.

Later in the year, Hitchhiker was modified to meet Two Ton Cup regulations and won the World Two Ton Cup at Porto Cervo in Sardinia. Returning to Australia, Peter Briggs and his crew sailed to fifth in the Sydney-Hobart yacht race and second in the Southern Cross series. Hitchhiker was shipped back to Australia and won the inaugural Hamilton Island Race Week in 1984 (returning for race weeks in 2008 and 2013).

A veteran of two Admiral's Cup campaigns, two Hawaiian Clipper Cup series, the World Two Ton Cup Championship and three Sydney-Hobarts, Hitchhiker has continued to be a part of the competitive local sailing scene after her retirement from international regattas. The yacht won most of the offshore races upon its return to Western Australia including the first West Coast Offshore series.
