Description: Herreshoff 47 Custom Cutter 1981
TASHTEGO II
Built in Western Australia in 1981 to a custom design from renowned classic yacht designer and Americas cup legend Halsey Herreshoff, Tashtego II was selected for a solo international bluewater voyage in the early 2000s by her previous owner for her solid, durable and fast epoxy-composite hull, along with her classic, timeless seaworthy lines.
Following this purchase, in 2010 Tashtego II went into drydock to receive a complete top to bottom $600,000 refurbishment, to prepare her for the extreme conditions expected in global ocean navigation.
Americas cup designer Phil Kaiko was enlisted to design a new, purpose built cutter rig for Tashtego II, to handle the expected conditions, while still being safely managed by a single handed sailer, as the central brief of this no expense-spared refit.
The Kaiko full carbon fibre rig was optimised with a wardrobe of taffeta laminated carbon moulded sails for strength, durability and power, a furling staysail to balance this rig's power and for storm weather safety, and a carbon fibre bowsprit extension added to allow the single handed use of furling, high power asymmetric reaching sails.
The 2010 rebuild, with a complete strip back and resurface, new high headroom cabin and deck, fully new rigging, fittings and fixtures, custom rewire with full circuit protection, high capacity water maker, NKE electro-hydraulic auto helm, radar, and international registration with full send-receive AIS, established Tashtego II as seriously equipped for the most hard core of ocean yachting adventures.
The global voyage was cut short in 2012 by changed circumstances for the owner, and as Tashtego II was returning to Fremantle, she found harbour with her current owners in Esperance on the pristine south coast of Western Australia, where she has since been used for local offshore racing and cruising the Southern ocean amongst the Recherche Archipelago that surrounds the area.
