MERCATOR is a Herreshoff ´Mobjack´ design, centre cockpit, cutter rigged ketch, professionally built - one plank width higher in the topsides than standard plans, to ensure a dryer boat. LOA 48ft / LWL 39ft

She was the builder´s own boat. Currently set up for long distance shorthanded cruising. Easily handled by two people.

Frames: White oak, steam bent.
Planking: Oregon, 35mm. Splined below waterline and epoxy/glass sheated (2018)
Deck: 18mm teak, over 20mm marine ply on Oregon beams
Spars: Oregon, totally rebuilt 2018. Finished with Everdure, epoxy primer and 3 coats 2 pack polyurethane

Extensively refurbished 2018-2020.

Mercator was inherited by Making Waves Foundation in 2017, in very poor condition. She formed the focus for a vocational traning program run by MWF (called Wright of Passage). Two professional shipwrights, a variety of specialist contractors, six young trainees and a team of volunteers rebuilt the vessel, with the objective of sailing her to Hobart for the 2019 Wooden Boat Festival. Over $180,000 was spent, along with more than 5000 hours of volunteer and trainee time. The Hobart voyage was an outstanding success, including crossing the Bass Strait in 30 knots of breeze.

In 2020, a further $11,000 was spent to replace all standing rigging in order to meet the insurer´s requirements.

Mercator was hauled out in May 2021 for a clean, antifoul and anode replacement.
