Laurent Giles Vertue

The Vertue has long been the go-to-design for short-handed, long ocean passages due to its well-earned reputation as one of the most seaworthy designs. Island Vertue has a heavy displacement, long-keeled hull built to professional standards. Ideal for handling rough conditions and well suited to bluewater cruising. It is a very sea-kindly yacht with traditional lines and all the character and charm of a wooden boat without the upkeep and maintenance required for an older timber yacht. This is because the hull is of composite construction - strip-planked, western red cedar sheathed in epoxy and fibreglass. There's no need to worry about rot or caulking.

Island Vertue was constructed in 2001 and combines traditional wooden boat aesthetics with the practicality of a fibreglass yacht. The Vertue was designed in 1936 by Laurent Giles and, since then, many serious offshore voyages (including circumnavigations) have been completed - most famously Humphrey Barton crossing the Atlantic in 1950 aboard Vertue XXXV.

Stepping aboard, the deep cockpit feels safe and secure behind the dodger with all sheets and furling lines easily accessible and manageable from the helm. Down below, the fit out is traditional and warm - everything you look at reminds you of what a capable and reliable vessel this is.

If you are looking for a simple, reliable, beautiful, and seriously capable yacht, look no further. Perfect for a single-handed sailor, a couple, or small family, she is ready and waiting for the next adventure.

Ivy has been on many adventures with our family of five. But with growing children the time has come to finally upsize.
