Designed by renowned New Zealand yacht designer Doug Peterson, the Peterson SP30 has long been respected for combining genuine racing performance with practical cruising accommodation. Developed from Peterson's highly successful IOR-influenced designs, the SP30 delivers responsive handling, excellent upwind performance and rewarding sailing characteristics while remaining manageable for short-handed crews.
Spare Time is a 1985 fibreglass example measuring 9.10 metres LOA with a beam of 3.2 metres and a lead keel drawing 1.8 metres. Under current ownership since 2024, the yacht has benefited from extensive mechanical and cosmetic improvements aimed at creating a reliable, enjoyable and competitive club racer-cruiser.
Recent upgrades include replacement shaft seals, propeller shaft seals, engine diaphragm and hull clamping plate, new engine filters, thermostat, impeller, anodes and engine/saildrive mounts. New professionally fitted acrylic windows were installed in late 2024. The vessel has also been antifouled and maintained with receipts available for major works.
Below deck, the SP30 offers a practical and surprisingly spacious interior. Accommodation provides sleeping for up to six with a forward V-berth, comfortable saloon settees amidships and quarter berths to port and starboard.
A manual marine toilet is fitted, while an AM/FM stereo provides entertainment aboard.
The L-shaped galley to port features a two-burner metho stove, sink, storage and an icebox, providing all the essentials for comfortable cruising.
The deck layout reflects the Peterson's dual personality as both a capable cruiser and competitive club racer. All running rigging is led aft to the cockpit for efficient short-handed sail handling.
Equipment includes Lewmar ST40 self-tailing winches, cabin-top winches, aft-mounted winches and eight rope clutches. Ground tackle includes 10kg and 12kg anchors complete with chain and rode. Protective covers for hatches, winches and tiller are also included.
Auxiliary power is provided by a Volvo Penta 2002 diesel engine producing 18hp and driving through a saildrive unit. The engine delivers an economical cruising speed of approximately 5 knots with a maximum speed around 6 knots while consuming approximately 1.5 litres of fuel per hour.
Navigation equipment includes a GME GX700 VHF, Raymarine TriData instruments, Raymarine ST2000 tiller pilot and bulkhead compass. Recent electrical upgrades include new batteries and LED interior lighting.
Safety equipment includes six lifejackets, flare kit, MOB retrieval equipment, dual fire extinguishers and automatic and manual bilge pumps.
Spare Time represents an excellent opportunity to purchase a proven Peterson design that combines racing performance with practical cruising capability.
Substantial recent maintenance and upgrades mean much of the hard work has already been completed. Whether your plans involve competitive club racing, twilight sailing or coastal cruising, this yacht offers exceptional value, proven results and immediate enjoyment.
Capable, economical and well maintained, Spare Time is ready for her next owner to step aboard and sail away.
