An absolute classic yacht from the drafting board of the world-renowned Laurent Giles comes the beautiful Vertue 25. It is a testament to the design that these vessels are still being built nearly eighty years after the original design was penned. Eric Hiscock had one built in the late 40s and sailed it extensively. When he married, he commissioned Giles to alter the Vertue 25 plans to lengthen the design to 30 feet, and this was the birth of the Wanderer 3, which he subsequently sailed around the world three times. Patience of the Huon is a Vertue 25 that was launched by the current owner in 2009; however, her keel was laid thirty-nine years earlier in 1970. Incredibly, the original builder bought and racked the timber that was ultimately used by the current owner to complete the vessel and she was launched in 2009.
Below decks, she has the traditional fit-out as per the original plans; this timber interior is warm and pleasant, providing an old-world charm that is rare to see in the era of lightweight fibreglass mass-produced Lego boats. With a functional galley to port and a Nav station to starboard before the twin settees, private head and V-berth, there is everything a cruising couple might need.
On deck, or rather from the jetty, Patience of the Huon is a sight to behold: a beautiful classic design that looks as seaworthy as she is, with white paint and gleaming brightwork; this is a yacht that deserves to be out there sailing between wooden boat shows and festivals. The purposeful cockpit and the varnished tiller fit like a glove on a hand, and while there are some modern touches, they fade into the beauty of the original Laurent Giles design.
Patience of the Huon is powered by a low-hour modern Yanmar 2YM15hp, a far cry from Eric Hiscock's 3hp petrol Stuart Turner engine; the Yanmar provides effortless power and reliability, giving you the confidence to know that you will get home.
Unlike most Vertues 25s, this one isn't 40+ years old, and she hasn't had 23 owners; she was launched in 2009 and has had one owner. She is in immaculate condition with all of the modern amenities, and she isn't hiding a lifetime of mishaps and degradation. Patience of the Huon is effectively a new boat that Laurent Giles would be proud of, and Eric Hiscock would certainly approve. So if you want to cruise short-handed, compete in some classic racing or collect the wooden boat trophies, Patience of the Huon is for you.
