Westsail 32

There are cruising yachts, and then there are yachts that have genuinely earned a reputation for crossing oceans. The Westsail 32 belongs firmly in the latter category.

WANTii is a USA-built Westsail 32, originally from San Diego and now lying in Fiji. She represents exactly what made these boats famous: traditional lines, immensely strong construction, a full keel, cutter rig and a practical offshore layout contained within a remarkably capable 32-foot package.
The Westsail 32 traces its origins to William Atkin's proven double-ended cruising designs, subsequently adapted for fibreglass construction by respected naval architect William Crealock. At approximately 19,500 lb displacement with 7,000 lb of ballast, an 11-foot beam and 5-foot draft, this is a substantial yacht for her length.
And these boats haven't simply cruised offshore. The Westsail 32 has a genuine single-handed ocean-racing pedigree. Dave White completed both the 1976 Singlehanded Transatlantic Race and the Singlehanded Transpacific Race aboard his Westsail 32 Catapha, while Mighty Sparrow completed a 271-day solo, non-stop circumnavigation from Gloucester, Massachusetts.
WANTii -- Equipped to Keep Cruising
WANTii has been set up as a straightforward, self-sufficient cruising yacht rather than a marina-dependent weekender.
Her cutter sail plan includes a brand-new mainsail, hank-on Yankee jib, hank-on staysail and symmetrical spinnaker, together with a telescoping whisker pole and staysail boom. Importantly for an offshore yacht of this type, the standing rigging received extensive professional replacement and swaging in April 2026, including the headstay, backstay, cap shrouds, lowers, bobstay, boomkin stays and whisker stays, with new turnbuckles fitted to almost every stay. A new masthead spinnaker bale and block and new spinnaker halyard were also fitted.
For serious passage-making she carries one of the great pieces of traditional bluewater equipment: an Aries servo-pendulum wind vane, complete with two spare vanes. It provides the sort of simple, low-energy self-steering particularly suited to a yacht designed to spend weeks rather than hours at sea.
Auxiliary power is provided by a Yanmar 2GM diesel, professionally serviced in April 2026, with a new key and ignition assembly fitted at the same time. A useful inventory of spare filters, oils and engine parts accompanies the vessel.
Electrical independence comes from three 120W Renogy solar panels, two new 770 CCA deep-cycle batteries fitted in 2026 and a 2,000W inverter. Navigation and communications include a Samsung tablet running Navionics Pacific charts, depth sounder, fixed-mount VHF and Starlink Mini with roaming/ocean capability.
Her cruising inventory continues with twin 40-gallon aluminium water tanks, a 25-gallon diesel tank, substantial ground tackle including 45 lb and 35 lb CQR anchors, 250 feet of 3/8-inch chain and an ABI bronze manual windlass.
Even the tender arrangements reflect the traditional cruising philosophy. WANTii carries both a charming 7'6" rigid plywood sailing dinghy and a 9-foot Avon inflatable, together with a 3.5 hp Nissan two-stroke outboard serviced in May 2026.

The attraction of the Westsail 32 has never been about squeezing the greatest possible accommodation into 32 feet. It is about putting a remarkably capable little ship beneath you.
The heavy-displacement hull, protected rudder, full keel, cutter rig, substantial ground tackle and simple systems reflect an era when offshore yachts were expected to look after their crews thousands of miles from assistance.
