Whiting Reactor 45 49 Serious Offshore Cruiser

Cheyenne is not just another boat, she is a one-of-a-kind, high-performance offshore cruiser, designed for serious ocean sailing. Built by the renowned Whiting family in New Zealand, she was constructed to be fast, safe, and comfortable in all conditions. This exceptional yacht is owned by Alan Blunt, the highly experienced world cruiser. With decades of expertise in offshore yacht preparation and carbon mast construction, Alan has ensured Cheyenne has been rebuilt, refitted, and maintained to the highest standards.
Cheyenne, a Whiting 49, is available for sale and currently located in the Bay of Islands, NZ. She is a US-documented vessel that has been imported to NZ, as such she can come and go without any restrictions or bond. As a non-NZ vessel, she does not need to meet the extensive NZ Cat 1 offshore safety requirements.
She has dual AC voltage systems and can run on either 220V or 110V shore power. Over her lifetime, Cheyenne has been extensively cruised and is equipped with most of what's necessary for offshore passage-making and extended cruising. While she is not quite ready to go, she could be fully prepped by the start of this year's season for minimal expense.

Design and Construction: Cheyenne was designed by Paul Whiting and built in the highly regarded Whiting family shipyard in Auckland, NZ. The hull and deck are hand-laid solid fiberglass, built by skilled Kiwi craftsmen to the highest standards. She is overbuilt and has never had a hint of a structural issue. Paul Whiting was renowned for designing seaworthy ocean-going yachts that were fast, safe, and comfortable in all sea conditions.
In 2002-2003, Dencho Marine in Long Beach, CA, undertook a major refit and modification. This included lengthening her to 49' with a walk-through transom and cockpit modifications. A very conservative triple-spreader carbon fiber mast with oversized rod rigging and outboard chainplates was also fitted. Almost everything that could be replaced or upgraded was, including new water and diesel tanks, all stanchions, pulpits, deck hardware, wiring, plumbing, and thru-hulls. Essentially, she was like a new boat.
Since then, Cheyenne has had two "in-shed" refits and a mechanical refit in 2022. This included a new transmission and flexible coupling, rear engine mounts, exhaust system, cutlass bearing, steering chain and cables, and an inspection of the keel bolts and rudder.

Engine and Maintenance: She is powered by her second diesel engine, a solid and low revving Perkins 4/236.
This engine uses no oil, is highly reliable, and has been meticulously maintained. It won't let you down, with many more thousand hours before needing a rebuild. It comes
with a maintenance log and an extensive inventory of spare parts. The 3-blade Max Prop VP had a full rebuild in 2019. The prop shaft is machined from Nitronic 60, which has about twice the strength of 316 stainless steel. She had a bottom job in December last year, with all the coatings removed, new epoxy undercoat applied, and two coats of antifoul.

Interior and Equipment: The traditional all-teak interior is in good condition, with a few unobtrusive areas of delamination and plenty of handrails. All the upholstery and foam squabs have been replaced at least once. There is plenty of bedding and towels, plus lots of all important storage spaces. A new electric toilet was installed in the forward head this winter.
The Spectra Cape Horn watermaker was completely rebuilt in 2016 and comes with spare pumps, membrane, a rebuild kit, and spare parts. The Isotherm DC refrigeration system, installed new in 2021, draws 4 amps and powers a large deep freeze, drinks cooler, and reefer. The Raymarine autopilot, installed new in 2020, has a hydraulic linear drive, and a backup chain drive, and a spare control unit. All the canvas and covers are in good condition, and there are unused sun awnings and a wind scoop, still to be rigged. Over the years, a very comprehensive selection of spare parts has been collected, including a large selection of stainless-steel fasteners and tools. Most of the minor items like buckets, hoses, flashlights, solvents etc, things that add time and cost are already on board.
