Somewhere on Moreton Bay right now, the afternoon sea breeze is filling in.
This boat is ready to meet it.
She's a 2008 MacGregor 26M, and she's had the kind of attention most boats only dream of. Every centimetre, inside and out, has been hand-detailed. The cabin has been cleaned top to bottom, the electrics checked, every light working, and the console refitted. She's waiting on her registered MacGregor trailer at Pacific Point Marina, with a new winch and Dyneema cable for smooth retrieves, the only 26M for sale in South East Queensland.
Up front, a self-tacking furling jib takes care of itself every time you tack. Put the helm over, and she simply comes about, so one person can sail her as easily as two. And in the sail bag is something special: a MacGregor 26M spinnaker, for sensational looks and amazing downwind velocity. Hoist it for a run down the Broadwater and watch heads turn on every jetty you pass.
Life aboard is sorted. A butane stove in the galley handles the morning coffee, and a Magma combination stove and gas grill turn the cockpit into an outdoor barbecue at anchor. The Bluetooth stereo plays inside and out, a marine clock and temperature, pressure and humidity gauges keep watch over the weather, and an all-weather compass points the way home. A 100W solar panel and a battery charger with monitor keep the power topped up, so you'll be ready for a quiet night at anchor as soon as you drop in a battery. Two swim ladders make it easy to jump in and climb back out.
She's sold without an engine, and that's your opportunity. The pedestal wheel steers the twin rudders independently of any outboard, so she steers and sails as she is. But the optional engine is up to you. A 25 to 30 hp four-stroke suits a sailing setup. It's light, cheap to run, and all you need to get in and out of the marina and on and off the boat ramp. Or fit up to 60 hp, and she'll lift onto the plane like a powerboat, the trick that made the 26M one of the best-selling trailer sailers ever built. Quiet sailor or weekend speedster: you decide who she becomes.
Why the 26M:
- Water ballast: drain her to tow, fill her on the water, so she travels light and sails steady
- Retractable daggerboard draws about 0.3m board up. Nose onto a sandy beach, explore shallow creeks, launch at an ordinary ramp
- Rotating mast, twin rudders and a mast raising system get one or two people rigged and sailing quickly
- About 1.83m standing headroom and berths for six: a small cruising home that follows you down the highway
- Built-in flotation
Weekend at Tangalooma. Tow her north to the Whitsundays. Or leave the marina fees behind and keep her in the driveway, ready for the next good forecast.
