2010 POWERCAT 3000 SPORTS CABRIOLET -- TWIN SUZUKI DF250 -- 340 HOURS
$210,000 · Townsville, QLD
One owner. 340 hours. Genuine reef-capable catamaran.
This is the boat that turns "maybe one day we'll get out to the reef" into "we're going Saturday. "
A comparably specified new Powercat 9000 Sports Cabriolet is north of $380,000 today, with a build wait. This one's ready now.
Built by Powercat Marine at Caboolture in 2010, this 3000 Sports Cabriolet has had one owner and just 340 hours on the clock -- around twenty hours a year. It has been used the way good boats should be used: often enough to stay healthy, gently enough that it still presents beautifully.
Why the Powercat 3000 is the right hull for North Queensland
The 3000 won its class at the AMIF awards and has stayed a benchmark ever since, and anyone who has run one knows why. Twin hulls with 28 degrees of deadrise give you a ride that simply doesn't punish you the way a monohull does when the trade winds pick up in the afternoon. It stays rock-steady at rest, which matters enormously when you've got kids moving around the cockpit or you're drifting a reef edge.
At 9.4 metres with 600 litres of fuel, the range is genuinely useful from Townsville. The Palm Island group, Orpheus, Pelorus, the Hinchinbrook Channel, the outer reef -- all comfortably in play as day trips, and set up for staying out longer when the forecast is kind. Magnetic Island is a twenty-minute run for a swim and a pub lunch.
Set up to fish
Huge stable casting platform with the rear lounge removed, Maxwell electric anchor winch with 50 m of chain and rope, Raymarine C80 GPS/plotter/sounder, GME VHF, live bait capability, stainless sink with pressurised water and a rear deck shower for washing down. Counter-rotating Suzuki DF250s back down hard and clean with no water into the cockpit -- which is exactly what you want when something big is heading for the horizon. Coral trout, red emperor, nannygai, Spanish mackerel. It's all right there.
Set up for the family
Fully lined and carpeted cabin with a large double bed and full standing headroom. Electric marine toilet with holding tank -- no bucket, no negotiations. 65-litre fridge, stove, sink. The moulded rear lounge and table convert to a second double bed, so that's four aboard comfortably for an overnighter at Orpheus. Open hardtop, breezeway clears, side curtains and a full set of camper covers mean you're covered whether it's blazing or blowing.
The engines
Twin Suzuki DF250 four-strokes, counter-rotating, with 340 hours. Naturally aspirated, no supercharger to service, and a deserved reputation as some of the most reliable four-strokes on the water. Cruises economically, and tops out around 50 mph when you're in a hurry to beat the weather home.
What comes with it
Original Powercat build documentation and insurance schedule from new, full safety and mooring pack, EPIRB, dual battery system with BEP VSR, four bilge pumps, Clarion stereo, compass, fire extinguisher.
Boats like this don't come up often in the north, and they very rarely come up with this few hours and this much paperwork. Inspections welcome in Townsville -- bring the family, have a look through her, and start planning the first trip.
