NEW Sportsman Open 212 Centre Console

The 212 is the entry point to the Open series, and Sportsman aim it squarely at the serious angler working within a 21-foot footprint. It is a high-capacity boat for its size: 6.53 metres, 2.59-metre beam, 18 degrees of transom deadrise, 265 litres of fuel and up to 250 horsepower, with an open cockpit deliberately kept clear.

The feature that defines it is the walk-through transom with a latching door, the only boat in the range described that way, and it changes how the boat works for diving, swimming and landing fish. Aft of the leaning post sits a 95-litre aquarium livewell with starboard viewing glass, sized well above what the class normally offers, and two insulated bow boxes forward double as fish boxes or coolers.

Rigging is a genuine selling point. Boat-in-a-Box 2.0 puts the electronics on removable boards inside the console with dual batteries and a selector switch, so servicing and upgrading are straightforward rather than a contortion. SportLink arrives with a 12-inch Garmin touchscreen, CHIRP transducer and JL Audio already installed and networked. There is a dedicated trolling motor battery compartment, a removable bow filler board with cushion, six-rod under-gunwale racks and a stern anchor compartment supplied with anchor, rope and chain.

The rest is standard Sportsman: no-wood all-fibreglass with vinyl ester resin, a single-piece extruded D-tube hardtop frame carrying five rocket launchers and spreader lights, Grip-Tex non-skid, a self-bailing cockpit, rub-rail navigation lights, NMMA certification and a 10-year limited hull warranty. Seakeeper Ride attitude control cuts up to 70 per cent of pitch and roll underway.
