A lot of the buyers I talk to want Riviera quality without the berth fees, the fuel bills and the white knuckles of parking a 50-footer on a blowy Fremantle afternoon. This 395 SUV ticks all three boxes.
Having sold new Rivieras for a good part of my career, I rate the 395 as one of the smartest boats they've built. Everything happens on the one deck. Beside the saloon door there's a stainless-framed hopper window that swings open, so the saloon and the rear deck become one space. Whoever's on the barbecue at the transom is still part of the conversation inside. The lounge right under that window is one of my favourite spots on the boat. You sit looking aft, out over the cockpit and the water behind you, so you get the ocean view without leaving the shade. On a warm day, open the window and the door and let the breeze through. She's perfect for a couple, but there's room to bring the kids or another couple over to Rottnest for the weekend without anyone tripping over each other.
What sets this one apart is how she's been optioned. She has the bigger Volvo IPS 600 package, 440hp a side instead of the standard 370hp, and you feel the difference. She'll do thirty-plus knots when you want it and a relaxed low-20s cruise when you don't, which puts Thomson Bay about half an hour from the harbour. There's a second joystick in the cockpit on the port side, so you can back her into the pen while actually watching the pen. Volvo's Trim Assist is another great bit of technology which finds the best running angle for the boat when underway.
Downstairs is where the 395 really surprises people. Those long windows you see in the hull from the outside aren't just for looks. They let natural light pour into the cabins, so it never feels like you've gone down into a cave. The master is right up in the bow, with a queen island bed you can walk around, hanging space and overhead lockers. The windows run down both sides and there's a hatch above for fresh air. The guest cabin sits midships with three single berths, which is ideal for kids or a couple of mates on a fishing trip, and it gets its own hull windows with opening portholes. The bathroom has a separate shower and opens to both the master and the companionway, so it works as an ensuite and a day head.
She's set up for staying out, not just going out, and the electrics are a big part of that. The house bank has been upgraded to smart lithium batteries. If you've only ever had lead-acid or AGM, the difference is night and day. You can use far more of the capacity before the batteries need charging, and they soak up charge much faster from the generator, shore power or the engines. That means a lot less generator time at anchor and a lot more peace and quiet. With reverse-cycle air throughout and a 7kW Onan as well, a still summer night behind Garden Island is no hardship.
Running it all is Riviera's CZone digital switching, and once you've used it you won't want to go back to a wall of breakers. Everything is on one touchscreen: lights, pumps, tank levels, battery state. Preset modes power up the right circuits for cruising, entertaining or leaving her at the dock, all with a single touch. You can dim the lights for the evening, check the water and holding tanks without lifting a hatch, and see at a glance how the batteries are going. If a screen ever plays up, every circuit can still be switched manually, so you're never stuck.
The cockpit icebox is refrigerated and there's an icemaker, so the drinks stay cold from breakfast to sundowners. For the fishos, she has twin 12" Garmin screens with radar, autopilot and a 1kW transducer, which is plenty for a run out to Five Fathom Bank. Cameras on the engine room, anchor and awning mean you can keep an eye on things without leaving the helm.
I have to say she presents beautifully. She has gloss walnut joinery throughout, a teak cockpit floor with grey caulking and a stainless rail across the transom.
She comes with a Sirocco 280 tender and Mercury 6hp on SnapDavits, ready to go. She comes with the balance of Riviera's five-year Volvo Penta Extended Coverage.
Late-model 395s don't come up often in WA. Give me a call and come and have a look.
