This is one of the most highly optioned 395 SUVs on the market. Its engines were upgraded to 440 hp, and the options list covers almost everything you would add yourself. If you want a sub-40-foot boat that can do it all, this is your answer.

When Riviera set out to build a boat under 40 feet, they started with a blank sheet of paper, and it shows. In my experience, the 395 SUV is one of the best-balanced boats Riviera has built in this size. A couple can run it easily on their own, yet it has the space and systems to take the family away for a week.

Inside, the aft galley sits on the saloon level. It has good storage, a Webasto drawer fridge and freezer, and high-end appliances. A stainless rear door and a hopper-window bulkhead close the saloon off from the cockpit completely. Webasto air-conditioning runs on both levels: 27,000 BTU in the saloon, plus an optional second 27,000 BTU unit below. Downstairs, the forward master has an island double with ensuite access. The aft guest cabin sleeps three, and its two singles convert to a double. There's a Vacuflush head with a separate shower. For downtime there's a Samsung Smart TV with Apple TV and KVH satellite TV.

The cockpit is where this boat really earns its keep. The aft-facing lounge and convertible table seat six for lunch, and a fold-out lounge on the port side adds seating when you need it. The composite teak floor and rod holders mean it's just as happy with a line in the water. This 395 SUV also has a 240 V ice maker and extra refrigeration under the seat. Up front, the foredeck sun pad, upholstered in Sunbrella with a hinged backrest, is the spot for sundowners.

You have to experience how this boat handles on the water to appreciate it. The engines were upgraded from the standard IPS-500 package to 440 hp each. The boat cruises above 25 knots with very good economy and is noticeably quiet doing it. The Volvo/Garmin Glass Bridge has twin 12" screens, radar and autopilot, which makes a run up the coast simple. A second joystick on the starboard side of the cockpit takes the stress out of berthing when you're short-handed.

Pull into Tangalooma and watch the anchor go down on the anchor camera, with 50 metres of chain behind it.. The tender sits ready on SnapDavits with its Suzuki outboard. The Onan 7 kVA generator and inverter look after a quiet night aboard, and the underwater lights finish the evening off.
