The Catalina 34 was an incredibly successful design, with thousands built and sold worldwide. Revered for its balanced performance and reliability, the C34 has earned a devoted following among cruising sailors. It's highly regarded for its excellent sailing characteristics, ease of handling, and surprisingly spacious, comfortable interior--a combination that makes it one of the most beloved 34-foot cruisers ever produced.
When you take a look at the Catalina 34 MKII, it's easy to understand why this model became one of Catalina's most successful designs. Simply put, it's a comfortable, practical, and highly liveable cruiser--thoughtfully laid out and remarkably easy to sail. Whether handled by a couple or confidently sailed single-handed, the 34 MKII shines.
With its seakindly moderate-displacement hull, the 34 MKII tracks surely and performs confidently across a wide range of conditions. Underway, it delivers a smooth, predictable motion, making passages more enjoyable and less tiring for everyone aboard.
The cockpit is exceptionally large for a yacht of this size, making the Catalina 34 MKII an absolute pleasure to sail. The long bench seats are perfect for stretching out and relaxing--ideal for lazing around at anchor--while the pushpit seats offer a fantastic vantage point whether you're underway or enjoying the view in a quiet bay.
A large fold-out cockpit table is great for entertaining, and when folded down it provides excellent bracing under sail. With all running rigging led aft, you can manage the boat confidently from the safety and comfort of the cockpit without needing to go forward.
Another thoughtful and practical design feature is the extra-wide, deep folding swim ladder. It makes getting back onboard after a swim exceptionally easy and provides a sturdy surface for steadying the dinghy while boarding the yacht.
'Volare' features an excellent electrical installation and a comprehensive suite of high-quality electronics. At the helm, a 9" Raymarine Axiom chartplotter, Raymarine tridata (depth and speed), wind instrument, and the autopilot controller are all positioned in easy reach.
At the navigation station below, you'll find an additional Raymarine C80 chartplotter along with a wireless remote for the autopilot, allowing full control from below decks or while moving around the boat. A Raymarine AIS transponder provides essential safety and situational data, and all systems integrate seamlessly via the Raymarine SeaTalk network.
'Volare' is equipped with an upgraded high-capacity electrical system designed for extended time off-grid. The house bank consists of Lithium LiFePO4 batteries (new 2025) with a total of 270 Ah, providing the same usable energy as roughly 600 Ah of AGM batteries, but at a fraction of the weight and with far greater efficiency.
Charging is handled by 400W of solar power (two 200W panels) feeding a 30A MPPT solar regulator, both installed in July 2025. This system consistently produces more power than the boat consumes, and while living aboard, the batteries rarely drop below 85% state of charge. This setup provides true energy independence and ensures you never need to plug the boat into shore power.
A 2000W pure sine wave inverter--also new in July 2025--is hard-wired into the vessel's 240V AC circuit, allowing you to power appliances from any 240V outlet on the boat. With ample capacity, the inverter can comfortably run high-draw items such as a coffee machine or toaster.
'Volare' is a late-model Catalina 34 MKII. In the final years of production, Catalina made several practical improvements to the design and took the quality to another level. The interior received a more modern colour scheme, the upholstery was upgraded, and innerspring mattresses were included as standard. Other small design changes improved the overall functionality and usability of the boat.
The interior design and layout is very well thought out and the use of space is outstanding.
The L-shaped galley is a generous size and thoughtfully designed for practicality and efficiency. The twin stainless-steel sinks are positioned near the centerline to ensure proper drainage while underway. The top-loading refrigerator is large and well-insulated for energy-efficient operation.
A gimballed two-burner stove with oven provides safe cooking, complemented by a gas detector. The Corian-style composite benchtops are durable and easy to maintain, and the waste bin is conveniently accessed through the benchtop, making day-to-day use simple and efficient.
The saloon has a comfortable and practical layout, suitable for relaxing both at anchor and underway. The table can be lowered, and with an infill cushion, it converts into a day bed or double berth for additional guests. The settees on either side provide secure sea berths, an essential feature while underway on passages.
The accommodation is quite outstanding for a yacht of this size. The forward owner's cabin features a plush innerspring mattress, and the width at the head of the bed is comparable to a king-size bed. A large hatch above the bed, along with opening portholes on either side, provides excellent ventilation.
The aft cabin features a spacious athwartships double berth. In a rough anchorage, sleeping sideways across the boat helps reduce rolling and is generally the most comfortable orientation. Two hatches open into the cockpit for additional airflow, and an extra porthole provides light and views of the ocean.
The bathroom is also very spacious for a yacht of this size. Shower curtains help keep the head dry, and there is a seat for when things get a little rocky. All of the sanitation hoses were replaced in September 2025, so the bathroom is as fresh as a daisy.
The stereo system was upgraded in 2025 and features a Kenwood Bluetooth head unit, kicker amp with micro subs, and new box speakers in the saloon and cockpit.
The mast is hinged and fitted with an efficient mast-lowering system. Two poles with deck mounts support the mast during lowering, and a removable stand secures it in place once down. The system includes a rechargeable Milwalkie electric winch, which makes the process easy and can also be used as an electric halyard winch.
Volare is an exceptionally well setup yacht, with a high-quality inventory of modern electronics, outstanding electrical installation, an excellent sail wardrobe, and nearly everything you could want on a cruising yacht of her size. She is a turn-key cruiser, ready in every respect to set sail immediately.
