Clansman 30 ~ A Proven Blue Water Cruiser

Clansman 30 - A Proven Blue Water Cruiser

Designed by Bruce Fairlie and manufactured by East Coast Yachts in Gosford, New South Wales, between 1965 and 1985, the Clasman 30 earned a reputation as a formidable bluewater cruiser despite its modest 30 foot length.

The Clansman 30 is a quintessential example of the rugged, "overbuilt" era of early Australian fibreglass yacht construction. Built to a standard rather than a price, these yachts are renowned for their exceptional strength, robust lay-up and ability to take on serious offshore conditions with confidence.

Built for sailors who value safety, simplicity and reliability, the Clansman 30 tracks beautifully offshore, looks after her crew in rough conditions and is renowned for her forgiving handling. The full keel provides excellent directional stability while also protecting the rudder and propeller--ideal for extended cruising and exploring remote anchorages.

The design's blue-water pedigree is perhaps best illustrated by the popular 'Free Range Sailing' YouTube channel, where a Clansman 30 safely carried a young couple thousands of offshore miles around Australia.

Otesha features a practical and well-thought-out interior that makes excellent use of the available space. There is a surprising amount of accommodation for a 30-foot yacht, with a total of six berths, making her well suited to family cruising or weekends away with friends.

The galley is another pleasant surprise for a yacht of this size, offering a practical workspace with plenty of room to prepare meals. It features deep twin stainless-steel sinks, a two-burner gas cooktop (currently disconnected), a top-loading icebox, and ample storage for extended cruising.

The electrical system has benefited from some recent upgrades. Both the house and engine start batteries are just six months old and are maintained by a 160W solar panel through an MPPT solar charge controller with a remote monitoring display. A Projecta 240V battery charger is also fitted for shore power charging. The switchboard has been upgraded with modern circuit breakers, and a convenient USB charging port.

The 15HP Yanmar engine ticks over ok. However, the flexible coupling between the gearbox and driveshaft has sheared and needs replacing. This is a not a massive job but will need to be done before the boat can be moved under her own power.

The manual windlass has just been rebuilt and is ready to bolt back on the foredeck. The anchor chain and rode are brand new.

Pros
o Great interior fitout with some fine quality woodwork.
o Upholstery is in very nice condition.
o The electrical installation has been upgraded and is in good working order.
o The inventory includes pretty much everything needed to get her sailing.
o Engine runs ok.
o This is a great project boat and with a bit of elbow grease will reward the new owner with a very capable cruising yacht.
o Great value for money at the asking price.
Cons
o She needs some TLC to get her back to her former glory.
o The flexible coupling need replacing.
o Rigging is of unknown age.

The current owner has reached the end of his sailing days and has made the difficult decision to place Otesha on the market.

Otesha represents an excellent opportunity for someone seeking an affordable entry into yacht ownership and who isn't afraid to roll up their sleeves. She would benefit from some cosmetic attention and general tidying, but the rewards will be well worth the effort. Beneath it all lies a solid, capable and proven cruising yacht with genuine blue-water credentials, offered at a budget price that leaves plenty of room for improvements.
